First, first, first… “First” is continuing. 

All is new and shining. 

My heart beat fast with expectation.
The first poem describes a moment when I attended the first English lesson in the small English cramming school. I was third-year elementary school student. The building was small and very old, but there was big windows. I could see the wonderful cherry blossom of tree out of the window. The whole room smelled of wood. When I smelled the room, I felt relaxed. 

Two teachers instructed me English. One was the British man and the Japanese woman. They were married couple. His name is Jimmy. He was very tall and gray hair. He was a funny man. Her name is Kumi. She had beautiful black hair. She was  bright and cheerful. They teached English tenderly to me. So, I liked their. I learned about “first” English knowledge.

I try the method to learn English.
I look up at the sky.

I point it.

I say “The sky. It’s light blue!”

My mother pridses me with clapping.

I see the moon. 

I point it.

I say “The moon. It’s beautiful yellow!”

My brother strokes my head with nodding. 

I find the little flower.

I point it.

I whisper ” The flower. It’s pretty pink.”

My friend repeats my words with smiling.

I like this method to learn English.

I take pleasure in studying English.

The second poem describes a moment when I was third-year elementary school student. I was nine years old.

 I studied  in the English cramming school. I started memorizing English words. But, I was having a problem memorizing new words. So, I thought of a good solution to the problem with my mother. I decided to incorporate English into my daily life. In other words, I decided to say in English what I pointed something. I tried that way in various places. For example, in the house, in the school, on the way home from school… I liked this method to learn English. I came to like studying English.

A dim room,

Smells popcorn,

Whispering voices,
”Harry Potter”

magic, mystery, action….

so exciting!
I hear narration and conversations in English.

It’s almost like a foreign world.

I’m caught in a spell…

The third poem describes a moment when   I was fifth-year elementary school student. I was ten years old.  I watched the movie “Harry Potter” with my father in the movie theater. The movie theater was very new theater. For the first time, I watched the movie in Japanese subtitle version. I could hear only English. Then, the world view of the movie matched with English that can be  heard.  So, I was excited. It was almost like a foreign world when I watched the movie. Since then, I don’t watch foreign movies with Japanese dubbing.

In elementary school,

I like talking with ALT.

ALT is Canadian woman.

She is very beautiful woman.

Her eyes are blue like the sea,

her hair is blonde like the ear of rice.

She is very kind and so cute!

Her favorite color is light yellow.

So, she often wears shirt of light yellow like the lemon.

I like her and taking with her. 

The forth poem describes a moment when I attended the English lesson in elementary school. I was eleven years old. My first ALT was a American woman. Her name is Jeimy.  She was very beautiful and kind. Her favorite color is yellow, so she often wore yellow clothes. The bright color suited her well. I liked her. My classmates liked her,too. She was a person who is loved by everyone. And I liked taking with her. 

She was often talking about her hometown. Her hometown is Missouri in U.S.A. She really loved her hometown, and her family left in the her hometown. I liked listening to her stories.

I like studying English words.

The fifth poem describes a moment when I attended the English lesson in elementary school. I was fifth-year elementary school student. I studied English in elementary school, but It was dull lessons. Because, I had already learned the contents of the lessons in the cramming school. It was easy for me to learn the English lessons. So, I said my teacher, ” I want to know more new things.” My teacher answered, “Before you learn something new, try reviewing what you have studied.”  His words suddenly rang a bell.  Promptly, I started reviewing. One Monday, I studied about numbers. One Tuesday, I studied about colors. One Wednesday studied….. I repeated it. That way, I liked reviewing the English words I learned.

In junior high school,

I study English in detail.

But, the lessons are deadly dull.

Because writing, writing, writing…

Talking with classmates is little time.

My heart seems the leaden cloudy sky. Never clear. Never be the blue sky.
The sixth poem describes a moment when I attended the English lesson in junior high school. I was first-year junior high school student. I studied English in detail. For example, English grammar — the present progressive form, past tense and the future perfect…. In the beginning, I studied hard it, but I had lost interest in the lessons. Because, it was only to write and less talk. I understood that It’s important for me to write English. But, I liked talking with my classmates and ALT. So, I have come to dislike writing English and the English lessons.

I first charge when I was nine.

My heart beats fast.

 I pass the fifth grade.

So, I give a happy smile!

I pass the forth grade.

I pass the third grade.

I pass the pre-second grade.

All is favorable!
But, I can’t pass the second grade.

I try one, two, three times, and more…

I can’t pass it.

The tears fall down my cheeks.
The seventh poem describes a moment when I was from nine years old to seventeen years old.  “Eiken” is Japan’s leading language assessment. I first challenged when I was a third-year elementary school student. I was really nervous. But, I passed the fifth grade! My cramming school’s teacher praises me. I wanted to try more. Next, I challenged the forth grade and passed it. I felt relieved when I know the exam results. Next, I challenged the third grade. and passed it. Next, I challenged the pre-second grade and passed it. My parents praised me. Next, I challenged the second grade. But, I couldn’t pass it. I tried it again. But, I couldn’t pass it, too. It was the same next time. I was feeling down.

In high school,

I want to go to Gunma university.

I have a wish, hope, and dream.

But, I can’t understand exam-English well.

New vocabulary,

difficult grammar,

and so long long sentence…..

I become confuse and discouraged.

I can’t have a wish, hope, and dream.
The eighth poem describes a moment when I went to the high school I was third-year high school student. I was seventeen years old. I wanted to go to Gunma univercity. Because I wanted to become a teacher. I studied English for the entrance exam. But, I couldn’t understand exam-English. I couldn’t remember new vocubulary. I couldn’t understand difficult grammar. I felt that I was left alone. I felt pressed for time. My teacher said, ”There is enough time. You don’t need to be in a hurry.” I couldn’t believe the words. I was driven into a corner.

I don’t see.  — very front, right way and my future 

I can’t believe. — my knowledge, capacity, heart

 I lose sight. — my confidence, hope and dream
But, I never give up studying English.
I understand English my hardest.
I keep studying , studying , studying….

The nineth poem describes a moment when I went to the high school. I was third-year high school student. I studied for entrance exam for Gunma university. But, the achievement of English didn’t grow. I was troubled by a big gap between the ideal and reality. I faced the harsh realities. I couldn’t believe my knowledge of English. I lost sight of my goal. But, I didn’t give up studying English. I just kept studying. And I took the entrance exam. Finally, I passed it. I could enter Gunma university. I was pleased to cry with my friends.

 I’m studying English in Atsushi’s class.
I have enough to keep up with the lesson.

But, I can hardly believe my ears.

Because He say,” Writing poems, please.”
—-What!? Poem!? Really!?!?
—- Can I do it?

I can’t move my hand. I can’t write…

I’m seized by the fear.
But It’s enjoyable than I expect.

The tenth poem describes a moment when I attended the English Lesson in the university. I’m studying English in Atsushi’s class. To be honest, It’s tough to understand every lessons. I have enough to keep up with the lessons. But furthermore, I was instructed to be surprised. Atsushi teacher said, “Writing poem, please.” I couldn’t believe my ears. And I thought, “Can I do it?” Even thought I tried to write poem, I couldn’t write it. As I didn’t know what to do, my anxiety just kept growing. But, once I got the hang of it, I could write.

Lesson8: Explanation of my theme

Theme of the book is “English and my life”.

I study English from elementary school student until the present. In other words, I have studied for the past eleven years. When I looked back, I understood that there were various things. At first, it was only something I didn’t understand. I was full of anxiety, but there were lots of people I could depend on around me. They assisted me in many situations. When I studied English, there were many disgusting things. There were many times when I thought that I don’t want to study English anymore. But, there was something as enjoyable as disgusting things. 

There poems looks back a lot of memories of English in my life.

Lesson8: self introduction 

Hello, I’m Yuka Obuchi.  I’m from Takasaki. I have been living in Takasaki since I was born. I go to Gunma university. I’m a second-year university student. I’m majoring a Japanese student in the faculty of education. I studied English for the first time when I was eight years old. I was a third-year elementary school student. So, I studied English from a elementary school student until the present. 

I went to Tsutsumigaoka elementary school. I began going to a small English cramming school. I like going there. 

And I went to Gunma Minami junior high school. 

And I went to Takasaki Municipal high school of Takasaki city university of economics. I studied English desperately for entrance exam. 

It’s up to now.
